E-LEARNING

CONCEPTS

DEFINITION
A learning system based on formalized teaching but with the help of electronic resources is known as E-learning. While teaching can be based in or out of the classrooms, the use of computers and the Internet forms the major component of E-learning. E-learning can also be termed as a network enabled transfer of skills and knowledge, and the delivery of education is made to a large number of recipients at the same or different times. Earlier, it was not accepted wholeheartedly as it was assumed that this system lacked the human element required in learning.
However, with the rapid progress in technology and the advancement in learning systems, it is now embraced by the masses. The introduction of computers was the basis of this revolution and with the passage of time, as we get hooked to smart phones, tablets  etc, these devices now have an importance place in the classrooms for learning.

NATURE AND CHARACTERISTICS OF E-LEARNING
  • §  Empowered by digital technology:  E-learning is pedagogy empowered by digital technology.
  • §  Computer enhanced learning : E-learning is a team which is used to refer computer enhanced learning.
  • §  Technology enhanced learning : E-learning includes all types of technology enhanced learning (TEL), where technology is used to support the learning process.
  • §  Online learning : Use of e-learning is generally confined to “online learning” carried out through the internet or web-based technology , with no face-to-face interaction.
  • §  More than CBL and CAI: E-learning conveys broader meaning than the terms CBL (Computer based learning) and CAI (Computer assisted instruction).
  • §  More than on-line learning : E-learning is broader in its meaning than they conveyed through the simple terms like “on-line learning “ or “on-line education”.
  • §  Not synonymous to audio-visual and multimedia learning : E-learning should not be considered as synonymous to audio-visual learning, multi media learning, distance education or distance learning. Although the audio-visual and multimedia technology and distance education programmes are based on the internet and Web services provided through the computers, yet these are not identical but complementary.

MODES OF E-LEARNING

 BENEFITS OF E-LEARNING

 E-RESOURCE
An electronic resource is any information source that the library provides access to in an electronic format. The library has purchased subscriptions to many electronic information resources in order to provide you with access to them free of charge. E-Resources include lots of things: full-text journals, newspapers, company information, e-books, dictionaries, encyclopedias, economic data, digital images, industry profiles, market research, career information, etc
M-LEARNING
M-learning or mobile learning is "learning across multiple contexts, through social and content interactions, using personal electronic devices."A form of distance education, m-learners use mobile device educational technology at their time convenience .M-learning technologies include handheld computers, MP3 players, notebooks, mobile phones and tablets. M-learning focuses on the mobility of the learner, interacting with portable technologies. Using mobile tools for  creating learning aids and materials becomes an important part of informal learning.

E-LEARNING MATERIALS
v E-textbooks
An electronic book (or e-book) is a book publication made available in digital form, consisting of text, images, or both, readable on the flat-panel display of computers or other electronic devices.Although sometimes defined as "an electronic version of a printed book",some e-books exist without a printed equivalent. Commercially produced and sold e-books are usually intended to be read on dedicated e-reader devices. However, almost any sophisticated computer device that features a controllable viewing screen can also be used to read e-books, including desktop computerslaptopstablets and smart phones.

v E-journals
Electronic journals, also known as e-journals, e-journals, and electronic serials, are scholarly journals or intellectual magazines that can be accessed via electronic transmission. Some journals are 'born digital' in that they are solely published on the web and in a digital format, but most electronic journals originated as print journals, which subsequently evolved to have an electronic version, while still maintaining a print component. As academic research habits have changed in line with the growth of the internet, the e-journal has come to dominate the journals world.
v    Digital library
A digital library is a special library with a collection of digital objects that can include text, visual material, audio material, video material, stored as electronic media formats (as opposed to print, or other media.), along with means for organizing, storing, and retrieving the files and media contained in the library collection. Digital libraries can vary immensely in size and scope, and can be maintained by individuals, organizations, or affiliated with established physical library buildings or institutions, or with academic institutions. The digital content may be stored locally, or accessed remotely via computer networks. An electronic library is a type of information retrieval system.

v E-Governance
Electronic governance or e-governance is the application of information and communication technology (ICT) for delivering government services, exchange of information, communication transactions, integration of various stand-alone systems and services between government-to-customer (G2C), government-to-business (G2B), government-to-government (G2G) as well as back office processes and interactions within the entire government framework. Through e-governance, government services will be made available to citizens in a convenient, efficient and transparent manner. The three main target groups that can be distinguished in governance concepts are government, citizens and businesses/interest groups. In e-governance there are no distinct boundaries.

v E-Content Development-Fundamentals
E-contents are basically a package that satisfies the conditions like i.e. minimization of the distance, cost effectiveness, user-friendliness and adaptability to local conditions (Saxena Anurag, 2011) E-content is digital information delivered over network-based electronic devices, i.e., symbols that can be utilized and interpreted by human actors during communication processes, which allow them to share visions and influence each other’s knowledge, attitudes or behavior(Buchholz Andrea & Zerfass Ansgar. 2005). Towards a broader definition “the design (pedagogical and learning principles used to create the digital intervention) of the subject matter (E.g. Math, Science etc.) in question and the digital delivery mode (Computer, Video etc.) used(NUEPA, 2007).

It may also be defined as “digital text and images designed for display on web pages. E-content means content in the electronic form. It is a combination of text, audio, video, images, animation with visual effects. Any digitized content that can facilitate the learning process and/or learning outcome can be termed as e-content. e-Content (defined as learning material with relation to new media) the acquisition of these contents takes place via four different channels: purchase of materials, use of freely available content on the Internet, self production of material, exchange of existing material in a network with other institutions of Higher Education
